MCM Expo Comic Con London May 2013

A bit of a mouthful of a title, but in the short I attended this years Comic Con in the Excel center last weekend!

This was my first ever convention, I had only heard that it was going on from a friend on Twitter informing me that she was going to meet Camilla Luddington. Of course, because I love Luddington and her performance as Lara Croft in the latest reboot, I was really hooked and wanted to go. After much convincing my parents gave in and I was super excited.

Originally I wanted to go in cosplay - specifically Alex Weiss cosplay for a convention, but seeing as I had only heard about the event the week before it was suppose to go underway, I knew I wouldn't be able to get my costume ready in time. Going in Alex Weiss cosplay would have hopefully been recognized by fans of the game, so they would know I was a Tomb Raider fan and we could talk! I had to settle for my Tomb Raider t-shirt and Lara Croft's necklace in the hopes someone would see me as a Tomb Raider fan. ;)

After a few train journeys we started seeing people in cosplay and it made me even more excited. They didn't care what "muggles", if you will, thought of them. It made me really happy, in a cheesy moment I felt "at home". Some of the cosplayers really put work into their outfits! I saw one guy who had contact lenses in that made his pupils red, and he was constantly in a zombie-like trance for the whole convention.

The most boring part of the event however was queuing. Initially I thought "I don't mind, we'll get to stand and see some more cosplayers" which we did, only the queuing took 2 and a half hours. We spent longer queuing than we did in the actual convention I'm afraid to say. I did see some awesome Lara Croft cosplayers though who were happy to take a picture.

I was also amazed by the amount of people with signs that read "Free hugs" on them! xD

When we were in the convention it was packed! There were so many people there, amazing really. My dad estimated about 5,000 people were queue with us. The main thing I was most excited about was seeing Camilla Luddington though. When I saw her I started jumping with excitement I was that happy to see her. There were other celebrities with stands as well for autographs but Camilla's was by the far longest!

This was also a great time to see some awesome Lara Croft cosplayers, and I was able to get this shot with an Alex Weiss and Lara Croft cosplay from the new reboot! Thanks to Jamie Butler and Lara-Violet HispancĂa-Cruse! Your cosplay was awesome :)

I didn't get a picture with Camilla or her autograph like I had hoped for, mainly because the line was long and I had already done a big one of those, so we just took a few photos of her from the side. xD

One thing about Comic Con that I was really gutted about is that I didn't get to meet many Tomb Raider fans. I saw lots of cosplayers, but they are just dressing up as Lara. I have no idea even if they are big fans like I am or just dressing up as the characters. I was convinced with the great cosplayers I took a photo with though because I spoke to Lara after the convention. I really wanted to see the Survivor Reborn fansite admins and Hannah that informed me about Expo in the first place.

I would love to return to Expo again as I loved this one so much! I believe there is one going on in October, so by then my cosplay will be finished and I will get to go with my friends. One of my closest friends wanted to go but didn't, and the one in October falls on her birthday so she's really excited to go now! Hopefully I can go with her October and another friend and I will have a better chance of meeting some Tomb Raider fans next time around, having known to get better passes that meant I didn't have to queue for so long. ;)

Thanks Expo for a great first convention! :)

Lara Croft Cosplay

Today I thought I would make a shout-out to an awesome Tomb Raider fansite that has been going around for quite a while now. laracroftcosplay.com is a site I have found myself visiting very often recently! The site is purely based around cosplaying Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider games and has been a real ascet to a school project that I am working on. I'll get to that at a later date ;)

Julie, Ornella, Lisa and Cindy
Sara, the site admin, posts easy, low budget tutorials on how to make Lara's gear, hair, makeup and such from the games and even a tutorial on Sam's headress from the latest Tomb Raider. The ice axe, two-way radio, Lara's trousers, rifle, pistol and even the competition bow have all been made at low prices and I am literally itching to see more!

Don't worry, it's not just the new Tomb Raider she does tutorials on. There are quite a few classic ones from later games like Lara's signature backpack, holsters, pistols and more that I'm also looking forward to more for.

laracroftcosplay.com also features galleries that Lara Croft cosplayers have sent in with their representation of the lead heroine. All the cosplayers work really pays off, pretty much all of the pictures in the gallery look awesome!

I highly recommend you check out this awesome site. Thinking of cosplaying Lara Croft? This is the place to be!

(SPOILERS!!)

If you have not yet completed the game then please DO NOT READ UNTIL GAME IS COMPLETED!

I had an idea for something that could have been added to Grim's death in the new Tomb Raider and I'd thought I would share it with you guys. :) The part marked in red is the part I added.

Lara held her bow equipped with an arrow, pointing at the Solarii madmen holding her Scottish friend Grim.  His hands were tied up and his face was angry. One scavenger was sat waiting to fire at her with his machine gun, another holding a large machete. Lara knew she had to do something fast.

The Solarii member held a knife to Grim's neck, his other hand over Grim's body to make sure he would escape. "Drop your weapons! Or we kill your friend!" he shouted.

"Don't fucking do it!" Grim shouted at Lara, he didn't want the poor girl to die. The scavenger's patience was ticking, and he started cutting his knife into Grim's neck.

"Okay! Okay..okay," She lowered her bow and placed it on the floor. Lara was panicking, what was she to do?

"That's nothing pal, I grew up in Glasgow!" Grim wasn't scared, only that Lara might die any moment now.

"Now kick them off the edge!" The scavenger shouted.

Suddenly, Grim bashed his head back into the scavenger's skull, got a good grip on him and swung him over the edge of the tower. The scavenger toppled into the mist below; Grim managed to take his knife off of him before he fell.

Lara picked her bow up, getting ready to shoot the other scavengers that were now reacting. The one with the machete ran towards Grim, ready to stab him. But Grim was faster, and stuck the knife into the top of his head.

One scavenger left, shooting bullets as Grim ran towards him. Lara was one shot away from saving them both when Grim did the unexpected. He ran into the scavenger head first, slammed him into an un-sturdy wall and they both toppled over the tower.

"Grim! NO!" Lara shouted. She lowered her bow. A look of loss struck her face. She felt angry, sad, heart broken all at once. How was she going to tell the others? She could have saved Grim. She could have prevented it all from happening.

"There she is!" a scavenger cried, running towards a zipline ready to attack the outsider. Several more Solarii members where arriving.

"AAGHH!" Lara turned around to face the tower and took out her pistol in one swift move. She shot the untouched explosive red barrels, screaming as she did so. The Solarii exploded in the flames of the barrels.
"I'VE HAD ENOUGH!" She screamed and panted. She had never been more angry.

"Lara, you there?" Roth called on the walkie talkie. Overcome by frustration, Lara grabbed the radio from her belt and smashed it onto the tower floor. She then started to sob and sat down over the edge of the tower, her hands in her face wiping off the tears. She had never lost a true friend before. Not since her parents disappeared from her life.

Thankfully the walkie talkie was still in tact, Roth calling on the other line of the channel. Lara had calmed down now and answered it.

"Lara, you ok? What happened?" Roth was sitting in an old pagoda with a sniper rifle.

"Roth. I'm sorry, I....I don't know what came over me,"

"It's alright Lara, have you met up with Grim yet?"

"Grim's.......dead.," Lara's face saddened when she said this. "They tried to use me as leverage to make him surrender, but he wouldn't let them."

"Oh Grim you....you stubborn bastard."

"I'm so sorry Roth..."

"No, don't be sorry Lara. Just make it count. We'll raise a glass to the old man when we get out of here."

And that's it. I'd of thought that Lara would have been angrier than she was when Grim died in the game so I thought I would add a bit. You may not agree with what I wrote but I thought it was a good idea :)

Will we see past Lara's again?

Since the new Tomb Raider has come out, I've began to think about the other Tomb Raiders. It made me think about the character of Lara that we have seen.

The classic Lara (1996 - 2003) had a complete biography with background information from when she was younger, her fears, an experience she had when she was 21, all sorts. She was a carefully scripted character.

Crystal Lara (2006 - 2010) showed emotion through gameplay at times. In Tomb Raider Anniversary Lara looked at her hands when she killed Larson and at the end of the game in order to show that she had blood on her hands. It was to show that Lara was a murderer, but that she HAD to do it.

When a game reboots a franchise with a completely new version of the character, does that mean that we never see the past Lara's ever again officially? Does this mean we will never see out Angel of Darkness trilogy or our Guardian of Light sequel? Now that we have the new Lara, does it mean there is no going back to the past games or developing on their stories?

Don't get me wrong, I love the new game, the story and the new Lara Croft. It just bothers me a bit that we might never see these Lara's again. The character that I grew up with that will never have another adventure.

I'm not entirely sure about what this "Lara Croft Reflections" project is that popped up. I'm hoping it's another side project like Guardian of Light. But I don't think it will be the same Lara. Most defiantly the newest Lara Croft will portray it (don't quote me on this, just a theory!) like I'd expect it to.

Please let me know what you think about this topic.

Tomb Raider store

We are 11 days from release now, and I couldn't be more excited. That is until Tomb Raider released their very own store last night with loads of jackets, tops, t-shirts, hoodies, trousers and 2 bags - one of which I want SO badly!

The store is easy to navigate and fun to find all the cool Tomb Raider branded merchandise. One of the tops that I quite like has the ESC key (escape key) on it that one of the member of the Endurance wears; Alex.

Most tops and hoddies come in Men and Women, except for the Sisters of Artemis tops which are all women. The sizes go Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large, Extra Extra Large. You can even purchase the Tomb Raider Soundtrack there.

I'll leave you to explore the site for yourself if you haven't already. Lots of great collectoable merchandise up here so it's really worth having a look. :)

Only 3 weeks to go!

We are 21 days away from the new Tomb Raider to be released, and since my last post quite a few new things have been revealed.

First, I shall start off with the box cover for the Collectors Edition, it looks more like a tin than a box so hopefully it will include some collectibles or goodies and not just boring old manuals and such. ;)

Some new gameplay has been uploaded focusing on the Monastery escape seen at last year's E3 but showing more of the diferent routes than the normal path to complete missions. We were also shown a specific cutscene again, but this time with more dialogue and more of a story. I warn you, spoilers included!
I would also like to briefly shot out to a LPer that I have admired for a year now; she has created her own version of Lara's necklace shown in the game and concept art. The outcome is really good, great for anybody looking to make the necklace! I have to say it looks much better than the official one they are releasing with the Limited Edition Strategy Guide. There are many other tutorials but I find this one is the most effective. :)

Just some news I thought I would share, so close to Tomb Raider! Only 3 weeks! to go! :D

My latest Tomb Raider related obsession...

Happy new year Crofts!

My last blog post was about remaking the classic Tomb Raider series and how many fans have created remakes of the classics but in picture form or "renders".

A while ago I got a program called XNALara where you can pose Lara in your own way, make her look like a badass or have a friendly relationship with Winston. Whatever you want Lara to do basically. Well I have recently got into making renders and since the start of the year have created several! I have mainly done remakes of the classics as I find them the most enjoyable to make. Here is one I did the other day and is my favorite so far:
It is a remake of Tomb Raider II Golden Mask where Lara hunts for the mask in snowy regions. This and a classic style model by user "not-again" are my favorite models, they look the most like classic Lara in my opinion and are fantastic! I love this scene as in the Golden Mask the sky looks quite orange like and the mountains fit the render perfectly. Add a snowmobile and presto, you have a Tomb Raider render.
My remake of my favorite and final level in Tomb Raider II,
"Home Sweet Home"

If you are interested in making one please tell me and I'll do a tutorial on this blog in the future, I may do one anyway just for fun. :)

Check out more of my renders on my deviantART profile here: http://jasoncroft.deviantart.com/

Thanks for reading! :)
